The Whole-Home
Surge Suppression Playbook
Surge strips lie to you and breaker panels don't protect your furnace board. How surges really get into your house, how to read an SPD spec sheet like an inspector, and how layered protection actually works — written from 20+ years in the trade.

Forget the movie version — lightning splitting a tree in your yard. A surge (the technical term is a transient) is any brief event where the voltage on your wiring spikes far above the normal pattern. Your outlets deliver a smooth wave that peaks at about 170 volts on a 120-volt circuit, 60 times a second. A surge rides on top of that wave and can push the peak to thousands of volts — for millionths or thousandths of a second.
That doesn't sound like much time, but electronics live and die in microseconds. Semiconductors and power supplies are built expecting that tidy 170-volt peak. Drive 2,000 volts through a circuit board designed for 170 and insulation punctures, junctions fail, and boards die — sometimes instantly, sometimes weakened until they quit three months later and nobody connects the dots.
What usually dies first in a modern home:
- Appliance control boards — refrigerators, washers, furnaces, and ovens are computers now, and their boards are surge-sensitive.
- HVAC equipment — blower motors and compressor controls are among the most expensive surge casualties in the house.
- LED drivers, garage door openers, TVs, and network gear — anything with a small power supply plugged in 24/7.
A surge protective device (SPD) doesn't "soak up lightning like a sponge." In the brief window of a surge, it clamps the voltage — it becomes a low-resistance shortcut that diverts the excess energy onto the grounding system for those few microseconds, keeping the voltage your equipment sees down to a survivable level. Everything in this guide follows from that one idea: limit the voltage, give the energy somewhere to go, and make the path as short as possible.
No panel device or plug-in strip stops a direct lightning strike — that's millions of volts arriving all at once, and it will jump, melt, or blow past any residential product. What good SPDs actually do is protect you from the far more common events: nearby strikes, utility switching, and the small surges your own equipment generates every day. Anyone who promises you "lightning-proof" is selling, not informing.
This guide explains how surge protection works so you can buy wisely and judge an electrician's quote. It is not a DIY installation manual. Never open your electrical panel — the service-side parts stay live even with the main breaker off. When in doubt, kill the power and hire a licensed electrician. That rule runs through every chapter.

Most stores don't carry the good stuff — or they sell it without anyone to install it right. I source new-age electrical products (smart switches, dimmers, LED retrofits) and install them to code. One call, one flat price, working before I leave. Have a specific device in mind? Ask — if it's legit and listed, I'll get it.
