Whole-House Surge Protection:
A Buyer's Guide

What power surges actually destroy, why your power strips aren't enough, and how to buy — and install — real whole-house protection. Written from 20+ years in the trade.

Chapter 1

What a surge is — and what it kills

A power surge is a brief spike in voltage above what your home's wiring and electronics are built to handle. Most surges aren't lightning. The everyday ones come from the grid itself: utility switching, capacitor banks cycling, transformer faults, and large loads (yours or your neighbors') switching on and off. Internal surges from motors and compressors in your own home happen constantly.

What surges destroy is almost always the electronics you care about most: refrigerators with control boards, HVAC systems, washers and dryers, garage door openers, TVs, computers, routers, and smart-home gear. A single strong surge can kill a $2,000 refrigerator's board in a fraction of a second — and the damage is often invisible until the appliance just stops working.

Chapter 2

Why power strips aren't enough

A plug-in "surge protector" power strip only protects what's plugged into it — and only the cheap ones people buy at big-box stores, with tiny joule ratings and no indicator light, offer almost no real protection at all. They can't protect the things that are hardwired into your walls: your HVAC, your water heater's control board, your hardwired smoke detectors, your garage door opener.

The right approach is layered defense: a whole-house surge protective device (SPD) at the panel to clamp down the big events, plus point-of-use protection at sensitive electronics. The panel device does the heavy lifting; the power strips clean up what's left.

Chapter 3

Whole-house SPDs explained

A whole-house SPD is a device wired into your electrical panel (or at the meter) that watches the voltage coming into your home 24/7. When voltage spikes above a safe threshold, it shunts the excess to ground — before the surge ever reaches your circuits. It sits upstream of everything, so it protects hardwired equipment and every outlet in the house at once.

Think of it as a bouncer at the front door of your electrical system. Nothing gets past it onto your branch circuits unless it's within safe voltage limits.

Chapter 4

Type 1 vs Type 2

Surge protective devices are classified by where they're installed:

For most homeowners, a Type 2 device installed in the panel is the right call. Type 1 adds another layer for homes in high-lightning areas or on long rural service drops — it's belt-and-suspenders, not the starting point.

Chapter 5

What to look for when buying

Four things separate a real whole-house SPD from a gimmick:

Don't overthink the brand

Match the SPD brand to your panel manufacturer when you can — Eaton for Eaton panels, Siemens for Siemens, Square D for Square D. The breaker-style units made for your panel fit cleanest and are listed for use in that enclosure.

Chapter 6

What it costs

The device itself runs roughly $100–$300 for a quality residential Type 2 SPD, depending on brand and kA rating. Professional installation is on top of that — and the honest truth is that installation is where the value lives, because this is panel work. Expect the total job (device + labor) to land in the low hundreds for a straightforward panel with open breaker spaces.

Compare that to one fried refrigerator control board ($300–$600) or one dead HVAC board ($400–$800), and the math sells itself. One surge event can pay for the device several times over.

Chapter 7

Why it needs a licensed electrician

A Type 2 SPD wires into your panel on a dedicated two-pole breaker, and it needs to be mounted as close to the main breaker as possible with short, straight conductors — long, loopy wires degrade surge performance. That means working inside a live panel, dedicating breaker spaces, and torquing connections to spec.

This is not a DIY project. One wrong move inside a panel can arc-flash, and an improperly installed SPD can fail to protect anything — or worse, create a hazard. A licensed electrician sizes the device to your service, lands it correctly, and verifies it's actually protecting the panel.

Chapter 8

SPDs wear out — check them

Surge protectors are consumables. Every surge they absorb eats a little of their lifespan. That's exactly why the status indicator matters: glance at it once or twice a year (I check mine when I change smoke detector batteries). Green means you're protected. If the light goes out or turns red, the device has done its job and given its life — replace it.

Most quality SPDs last years in a normal home, but a neighborhood with dirty power or frequent lightning can burn through one faster. Treat the indicator light like a dashboard warning: when it's out, act on it.
