A tripping breaker is your electrical system doing its job — but it's also telling you something. Here's how to read the message, what you can safely check yourself, and when to put the panel door down and call a professional.

Section 1
What a breaker actually does
A circuit breaker has one job: shut off power before the wire in your walls overheats. Every circuit in your home is a wire with a safe limit — a 14-gauge wire on a 15A breaker, a 12-gauge wire on a 20A breaker. When current exceeds that limit, the breaker trips and cuts power.
A tripping breaker is not broken. It's the guard doing its job. The danger isn't the trip — it's ignoring what caused it, or defeating the guard (never, ever replace a breaker with a bigger one "so it stops tripping" — that's how wires melt inside walls).
Section 2
The four common causes
1. Overloaded circuit. The most common cause by far. Too many things drawing power on one circuit — the classic is a space heater (1,500W) plus anything else on a 15A bedroom circuit. The math doesn't fit, so the breaker does its job.
2. Short circuit. A hot wire touching a neutral wire — from damaged cords, chewed wiring, or a failing appliance. This trips the breaker instantly and violently, sometimes with a pop or flash. Shorts are serious.
3. Ground fault. A hot wire touching ground — a metal appliance case, a damp outlet box. GFCI breakers and outlets exist specifically to catch these fast, because ground faults are how people get shocked.
4. AFCI "nuisance" trips. Arc-fault breakers (now required in bedrooms and living areas) detect the electrical signature of arcing. Sometimes they trip on harmless signatures — older treadmill motors, some phone chargers, fluorescent ballasts. Annoying, but the breaker may also be catching a genuinely loose connection. Don't assume nuisance.
Section 3
How to reset it safely (once)
If the breaker tripped and there's no smell, no scorching, and no heat, here's the safe sequence:
Unplug or switch off everything on that circuit — especially heaters, hair dryers, and anything that was running when it tripped.
Go to the panel. Find the tripped breaker — it'll sit in the middle position, between ON and OFF.
Push it fully to OFF first, then firmly to ON. Breakers must be reset through OFF; just pushing toward ON won't do it.
Plug things back in one at a time. If it trips the moment a specific device is plugged in, that device (or its cord) is the problem — stop using it.
⚠ The one-reset rule
Reset it once. If it trips again immediately or won't stay on, stop resetting it. Repeatedly forcing a tripping breaker on is how you turn a wiring problem into a fire. Leave it OFF and call an electrician.
Section 4
When to STOP and call immediately
Don't troubleshoot any further if you notice any of these — leave the breaker OFF and call:
Burning smell from an outlet, switch, or the panel — this is the big one.
Scorch marks or discoloration on outlets, switch plates, or the panel.
The panel or a breaker feels hot to the touch.
Buzzing, sizzling, or crackling sounds from the panel or an outlet.
The breaker trips instantly every time with nothing plugged in — that points to a wiring fault, not an overload.
Flickering lights across multiple rooms, which suggests a loose service connection.
⛔ Burning smell = emergency
If you smell burning plastic or see smoke: turn off the main breaker if you can reach it safely, get everyone out, and call 911 first — then an electrician. Don't go back in to "check the panel."
Section 5
What the real fix looks like
Most chronic tripping is an overload problem with a circuit problem's solution: the circuit needs to be split, a dedicated circuit needs to be run for the heavy load (space heater, microwave, treadmill), or the panel needs attention. These are all standard electrician jobs — usually a few hours, not a rewiring.
What the fix is never: a bigger breaker on the same wire. A 20A breaker on 14-gauge wire rated for 15A removes the protection and keeps the wire. I've seen the aftermath. Don't.
