The Honest Downsides of
Residential Solar

I'm not selling solar, and I'm not against it. Here's what the door-to-door salesmen won't tell you — from a working electrician who wires houses for a living.

Chapter 1

The upfront cost is real

A typical residential solar installation runs $15,000–$25,000+ even after the federal tax credit. "No money down" leases and PPAs exist, but read the fine print: you're trading the upfront cost for 20–25 years of fixed payments with escalator clauses, and a lien or UCC filing on your home that complicates selling or refinancing.

The federal Investment Tax Credit (currently 30%) helps, but only if you have the tax liability to use it — it's a credit, not a check. Plenty of homeowners discover after signing that they can't actually claim the full amount in year one.

Chapter 2

Pennsylvania's weak solar math

Solar economics are all about sun hours, and western Pennsylvania gets far fewer than the southwest. Pittsburgh averages well under the annual sunshine of places like Phoenix or San Diego — meaning the same panels generate meaningfully less electricity here.

Add in Pennsylvania's relatively low residential electricity rates and shifting net-metering policies, and the payback period stretches. Salesmen quote 7–8 years; in our part of the state, 12–18 years is more honest for many homes — and that's assuming nothing else goes wrong in the meantime.

Chapter 3

Your roof pays the price

Panels get bolted to your roof. Every mounting point is a roof penetration that must be flashed and sealed — dozens of them on a typical install. Sloppy flashing is one of the most common sources of leaks I've been called to fix, and leaks under an array are expensive to chase because the panels have to come off first.

Roof age matters

If your roof has less than 10–15 years of life left, putting 25-year panels on it is a mistake. You'll pay to remove and reinstall the array when the roof gets replaced — typically several thousand dollars. Do the roof first, then solar.

Chapter 4

The inverter will fail before the panels do

Panels are warrantied for 25 years, but the inverter — the box that converts DC to the AC your house uses — is the weak link. String inverters typically last 10–15 years, and a replacement runs $1,000–$3,000 installed. Microinverters last longer but cost more up front and you're still relying on electronics baked on a hot roof for decades.

Sales quotes almost never budget for this. Add one inverter replacement to your 25-year cost math and the payback stretches further.

Chapter 5

Panels slowly lose power

Solar panels degrade at roughly 0.5% per year. That sounds small, but over 25 years it's a 12–13% haircut on the output the salesman used to calculate your savings. Year-20 production isn't year-1 production, and the savings projections in most quotes assume it is.

Chapter 6

Nobody's figured out end-of-life

Solar panels contain glass, aluminum, silicon, and small amounts of hazardous materials like lead and cadmium (in some panel types). Recycling infrastructure for the coming wave of decommissioned panels is still thin — most end-of-life panels today get landfilled because recycling costs more than it's worth. If you're installing for environmental reasons, know that the back end of the lifecycle is the industry's weakest chapter.

Chapter 7

High-pressure sales tactics to watch for

Chapter 8

When solar DOES make sense

Fair is fair — solar isn't a scam, it's just a bad fit for a lot of houses. It genuinely works when:

That last point is where I come in. Almost every residential solar install in our area starts with the electrical panel: verifying capacity, adding the solar breaker, bringing grounding up to current code. Get that part done right and the rest of the project goes smoother.

Thinking about solar?

Most installs need a panel upgrade first. Call JS Power LLC.

I'm Jason Mohoska, owner-operator of JS Power LLC — a licensed electrical contractor with 20+ years in the trade, serving Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Before you sign anything with a solar company, have a working electrician look at your panel, your service size, and your grounding. I'll tell you straight whether your electrical system is solar-ready.
