Smoke & CO
Detectors
The cheapest life-safety devices in your house only work if they're in the right rooms, still alive, and loud where people sleep. The placement map, power options, interconnection, and the 10-year rule — in plain language.

Smoke alarms and CO alarms get lumped together because they live in similar plastic housings. They guard against different killers that behave differently in a house, and understanding the difference drives every placement rule in this guide.
- Smoke is a fire alarm. Most fatal home fires kill by smoke and toxic gases long before flames arrive — often at night, often with the victims asleep two rooms away from where the fire started. A working smoke alarm's job is time: the minutes to get out while escape routes are still passable. That's why placement focuses on bedrooms and the paths out of them.
- Carbon monoxide is a poisoning alarm. CO is produced by incomplete combustion — furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, gas stoves, attached garages, generators. It's colorless and odorless; the early symptoms (headache, dizziness, nausea) mimic the flu and arrive while you sleep. A CO alarm's job is to warn before concentration builds to danger — its placement focuses on sleeping areas and proximity to fuel-burning appliances, and its sensing rules (alarm thresholds over time) are deliberately slower, designed to ignore harmless traces and catch the real build-up.
Two consequences worth internalizing before the placement chapter:
- A combination smoke/CO unit is convenient, not automatically ideal. Smoke rises and wants ceiling placement; CO mixes with air fairly evenly and manufacturers specify their own mounting guidance. A combo unit must satisfy both jobs — modern combos are engineered for it, but follow their specific instructions.
- Neither device prevents anything. They buy minutes. Minutes only help a household with a plan — exits known, a meeting point, kids who've practiced. The alarm is the starting gun, not the race.
Ahead: the room-by-room placement map (the chapter to tape inside a closet door), power choices — hardwired, battery, sealed 10-year — interconnection (why all the alarms should shout together), sensor technology, the replacement clock that most homes are quietly overdue on, maintenance that actually happens, and how to silence a nuisance alarm without disabling your protection.
Fire investigators repeat it after every fatal fire: the deadliest alarm is the one that's missing, dead, or disabled after chirping. Every chapter here is aimed at that single failure mode — installed, alive, and never so annoying that someone takes the battery out.
