Home EV Charger
Buyer's Guide

Level 1 vs. Level 2, plug-in vs. hardwired, and the question nobody asks until it's too late: can your panel actually handle it? Straight answers from an electrician who installs chargers.

Section 1

Level 1 vs. Level 2: what the numbers mean

Level 1 is the charging cord that comes with the car, plugged into a regular 120V outlet. It adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour. If you drive 30 miles a day and park 10 hours overnight, Level 1 genuinely works — slow, but free to start.

Level 2 is a 240V charging station (like a dryer outlet on steroids) that adds roughly 20–45 miles of range per hour depending on the amperage. A typical EV goes from empty to full overnight. For most EV owners, Level 2 is where the ownership experience stops being annoying and starts being great.

The honest test: if you regularly come home near-empty, drive more than 40 miles a day, or own two EVs, you want Level 2. If you drive 20 miles to the train station and back, try Level 1 for a month first — you might never need more.

Section 2

NEMA 14-50 outlet vs. hardwired

A NEMA 14-50 outlet (the big 4-prong RV/range-style receptacle) with a plug-in charger is the flexible option: the charger can travel with you, and the outlet can serve an RV or welder later. Code now requires GFCI protection on these outlets in garages, which adds cost and — frankly — GFCI breakers on 50A circuits can nuisance-trip with some chargers.

Hardwired means the charger connects directly to the circuit with no plug. It's required for the fastest 48A chargers, avoids the GFCI-breaker requirement, looks cleaner on the wall, and eliminates a wear point. The tradeoff: moving it later means an electrician visit.

My recommendation for most people: hardwire it. It's cleaner, more reliable, and usually cheaper installed than a 14-50 with GFCI protection done right.

Section 3

40A vs. 48A chargers — and the circuit each needs

EV charging is a continuous load — it can run for hours — so code requires the circuit to be rated at 125% of the charger's draw. The math:

Here's what the brochures don't say: the jump from 40A to 48A buys you maybe 8 extra miles per hour of charging — meaningless overnight, when the car sits for 10 hours. A 40A charger on a 50A circuit is the sweet spot for most homes and most panels. Save the 48A for households running two EVs off one charger or genuinely huge daily mileage.

Section 4

Can your panel handle it? (Load calculations)

This is the step people skip, and it's the most important one. Your electrical service has a finite capacity — commonly 100A or 200A in our area — and every circuit in the house draws from it. Adding a 50A EV circuit to a 100A panel that's already running electric heat, a dryer, and a range can overload the service.

A proper load calculation (NEC Article 220) adds up your home's existing demand and checks whether the new charger fits. Common outcomes:

⚠ Don't guess on this one

"The panel has empty slots" is not the same as "the service has capacity." Slots are physical space; capacity is math. An overloaded service doesn't trip politely — it overheats. Get the load calculation done by an electrician before you buy the charger.

Section 5

Where to mount it

Closer to the panel is cheaper — every foot of wire run is copper and labor. Ideal spots:

Think about where the car's charge port is (driver side, passenger side, front, rear) and park the car where you'll actually charge it before finalizing the location. Moving a charger six months later costs nearly as much as the original install.

Section 6

What installation actually involves

A standard Level 2 install: load calculation, permit, running the correctly sized circuit from the panel to the charger location (usually in conduit through the garage), mounting and connecting the charger, labeling, inspection, and a test charge. Most straightforward installs are a single day.

What makes it non-standard: a service upgrade (100A → 200A), a long or difficult wire run (finished basement ceilings, detached garage), trenching to a pedestal, or an older panel that needs replacement anyway. A good electrician quotes the whole picture up front — charger circuit and any panel work it requires.
