EVs and the Power Grid:
Is Your Electric Car Just a Coal Car?

The "long tailpipe" question, answered honestly by an electrician. No preaching, no hype — just where your electricity comes from and what it takes to charge an EV at home.

Chapter 1

The long-tailpipe question, honestly

"Your EV just runs on coal" is the laziest version of a fair question. The fair version: an electric car's emissions depend on the grid that charges it. An EV in Washington state (mostly hydro) and an EV in West Virginia (mostly coal) are not the same car environmentally, even if they're the same car in your driveway.

So the honest answer starts with: where does your electricity come from? For most of Pennsylvania, that means the PJM grid — and the answer might surprise both the EV cheerleaders and the coal-car crowd.

Chapter 2

Where Pennsylvania electricity actually comes from

Pennsylvania sits in the PJM Interconnection, the grid operator covering 13 states. Per PJM's 2025 state data (sourced from EIA Form 923), Pennsylvania's generation mix looks like this:

So no — in Pennsylvania, your EV is not "just a coal car." It's mostly a natural-gas-and-nuclear car, with coal a shrinking slice. That's still fossil fuel, and anyone who tells you an EV here is zero-emission is wrong. But the "coal car" talking point is about a decade out of date.

Marginal demand is real

One honest caveat: when you plug in an EV at 6 PM, the extra electricity you pull usually comes from whatever generator ramps up to meet it — often a gas plant. Your average grid mix and your marginal mix aren't the same thing. Charging overnight on off-peak hours is genuinely cleaner and cheaper, which is why time-of-use rates exist.

Chapter 3

What the lifecycle studies say

Full lifecycle analyses — which count manufacturing the battery, generating the electricity, and the car's whole life — generally still favor EVs over gas cars, even on fossil-heavy grids. The break-even point (where the EV's cleaner operation pays back its dirtier manufacturing) varies by study and grid, but it's typically measured in tens of thousands of miles, not the car's whole life.

The grid mix matters a lot, though. On a clean grid the advantage is huge; on a coal-heavy grid it's smaller. Pennsylvania's gas-and-nuclear mix lands in the middle — a solid but not dramatic lifecycle advantage. Anyone giving you a single number without asking where you live is selling something.

Chapter 4

What home EV charging actually requires

Here's the part that's my actual trade. Charging an EV at home properly means a dedicated 240V circuit — a Level 2 charger. The electrical requirements are real:

Don't do this yourself

A 60-amp circuit is serious power — this is dryer-and-stove territory, running for 8 hours straight. Undersized wire, a tired old panel, or a skipped load calculation is how garages burn. This is licensed-electrician work, full stop.

Level 1 charging (a regular 120V outlet) technically works, but it adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour — fine for a plug-in hybrid, painful for a full EV. If you're buying the car, budget for the Level 2 install.

Chapter 5

Why this is good business for an electrician

I'll be straight with you: EV charger installs are some of my favorite jobs. The customer already did the research, the work is clean (one dedicated circuit, one charger), and half the time the panel needs attention first — which means a panel upgrade or service change alongside the charger. It's honest work that makes the customer's expensive new car actually usable.

If your panel is full, corroded, or still running on 100-amp service with a fuse box, the charger install is the moment to fix all of it. Do it once, do it right.

Chapter 6

The bottom line

No, your EV in Pennsylvania is not a coal car — it's mostly gas and nuclear, with coal fading. Yes, lifecycle studies favor EVs, but the margin depends on your grid and your mileage. And none of that matters if your panel can't handle the charger.

Honest numbers, no hype either way. If you're going electric, get the electrical work done right first — everything downstream of the panel depends on it.
