Ceiling Fans &
Light Fixtures
The fan is the easy part — the box above it is the whole job. This guide covers fan-rated boxes and bracing, wiring for separate fan/light control, the step-by-step install, wobble cures, downrods and clearances, and smart controls that actually work.

Here's the thing nobody at the home center says out loud: a ceiling fan doesn't hang from the ceiling — it hangs from an electrical box, and that box hangs from the structure. A standard fixture box was designed to hold a few pounds of static light fixture. A fan is 15–50 pounds of rotating machinery that vibrates, torques, and works at its mounting for years. Fan after fan has come down because the box — not the fan — gave up.
The fix is a fan-rated box: a listed ceiling-fan support box, marked for fan support, engineered (with its mounting hardware) for the dynamic load. They come in two families:
- Pancake and saddle boxes that screw directly into a joist above — used when the box location lands on structure.
- Brace-bar kits — an adjustable steel bar that spans between two joists (installed from below, through the ceiling hole) with the fan box mounted to the bar. This is the retrofit workhorse: no attic trip, no drywall patch beyond the hole you already have.
Rule of thumb you'll hear me repeat through this guide: if the box doesn't say "for fan support," the fan doesn't go on it. Old work isn't grandfathered into physics — plenty of fans currently hang from fixture boxes installed decades ago, and "it hasn't fallen yet" is a statement about luck, not support.
Before the ladder comes out
- Kill the breaker and prove it dead at the existing fixture with a tester — live-dead-live. Wall switch OFF is not the same thing; power may still be present in the box.
- Know what you're standing on. Ceiling work is ladder work at full stretch — a stable ladder rated for you plus tools, never the top step, and a helper for the lift. Fans are awkward, not heavy; the drop risk is you, mid-reach, holding 30 pounds over your head.
- Photograph the existing wiring before you disconnect anything. Wire positions and splices documented = a restorable situation no matter what you find.
The chapters ahead: reading your ceiling to pick the right support, the wiring options (this decides whether you get separate fan/light control or a remote forever), the full install sequence, wobble diagnosis and the balancing cure, downrod and clearance math, smart switches and remotes, light-fixture weight limits, and the stop-and-call list.
Standard fan-rated boxes are listed for fans up to a stated weight (commonly 35 or 70 lb classes). Fans heavier than the box's rating — big 60-inch-plus models with light kits — need the heavier class or direct structural mounting. The fan's box and the fan's manual both state their numbers. Match them before you hang anything.
