Space Heater &
Winter Safety
A space heater is the biggest electrical load most homes ever plug in — and October is when Pittsburgh plugs them all back in. Circuit math that takes two minutes, the cord rules that don't bend, and the warning signs that mean unplug it today.

Almost every plug-in space heater sold in America is rated 1,500 watts on its high setting. That's not a coincidence — it's the most a manufacturer can ask from a standard household circuit, and it's more than most people realize. Run the math once and you'll never look at a heater the same way:
- 1,500 watts ÷ 120 volts = 12.5 amps.
- A typical bedroom or living-room circuit is 15 amps. The heater alone uses 83% of it.
- Everything else on that circuit — lights, TV, phone chargers, the other outlet behind the couch — shares what's left: about 2.5 amps, roughly 300 watts, before you're at the breaker's limit.
And "at the limit" isn't a safe cruising speed. Electrical loads that run for hours (heaters are the textbook case) are treated as continuous loads, and circuits are only supposed to be loaded to 80% for continuous use — 12 amps on a 15-amp circuit, 16 on a 20-amp. Your heater at full tilt is over the continuous budget of a 15-amp circuit before you've plugged in a single other thing. That's why heaters trip breakers, why they stress weak connections (Chapter 6), and why the rest of this guide exists.
What this means in a real room
- Heater on high + anything meaningful on the same circuit = a breaker trip waiting for the coldest night.
- Heater on low (often 750W ≈ 6 amps) is frequently the difference between "works fine" and "trips at 2 a.m." — half the heat, half the stress, and for a small room often enough.
- Two heaters on one circuit is a no, full stop — 25 amps on a 15- or 20-amp circuit. Two heaters in one room usually share a circuit even if the outlets look far apart.
- The heater's plug and cord get warm — that's normal physics at 12.5 amps with an aging receptacle; hot is not normal. Chapter 6 draws that line precisely.
The chapters ahead turn this math into a system: the 80% rule as a habit, when a heater deserves a dedicated circuit, the cord rules (short, and absolutely unbending), placement, the warning-sign list to act on immediately, older-wiring hazards common in Pittsburgh housing, winter's other loads, and the call-an-electrician list.
Heaters come out of closets after six months of rest — dusty, cords pinched where they were stored, into receptacles nobody has tested since spring. The first cold snap is when weak connections announce themselves. Read Chapter 6 before the first frost and check your setup while it's still a choice, not an emergency.

Chapter 1 is free above. The 80% rule in plain English, when a heater needs its own circuit, placement and clearance, the warning signs that mean unplug today, and winter's other hidden loads — all of it unlocks when you order.
