GFCI Outlets:
What They Do and Why They Trip

Those outlets with the little TEST and RESET buttons are the reason bathroom electrocutions dropped off a cliff. Here's how they work, where your home needs them, and what to do when one keeps tripping.

Section 1

What a GFCI actually protects against

A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) watches the current going out on the hot wire and coming back on the neutral. If even a tiny amount — as little as 5 milliamps — leaks somewhere else (through water, through you), it cuts power in about 1/40th of a second.

That's the difference between a startling shock and a fatal one. A regular breaker protects wires from overheating. A GFCI protects people from electrocution. They do completely different jobs, which is why you need both.

One GFCI outlet can protect every standard outlet downstream of it on the same circuit — that's why you sometimes find one GFCI in a bathroom protecting outlets in two bathrooms. Pressing TEST on the GFCI should kill power to all of them.

Section 2

Where code requires them in your home

Current electrical code requires GFCI protection in every spot where water and electricity are likely to meet:

If your home was built before these rules, your older outlets are grandfathered — but grandfathered isn't the same as safe. Adding GFCI protection to a 1970s bathroom or kitchen is one of the cheapest, highest-value electrical upgrades there is.

Section 3

The monthly TEST button check

GFCIs are electronic devices, and electronics can fail — sometimes silently, in the "still passes power but no longer protects" mode. That's why every GFCI has a TEST button, and why manufacturers say to press it monthly:

  1. Plug in a lamp or phone charger so you can see power is on.
  2. Press TEST. The RESET button should pop out and the lamp should go off.
  3. Press RESET firmly until it clicks. Power should return.

If TEST doesn't kill the power, or RESET won't restore it, the GFCI has failed — replace it. A GFCI that won't trip on TEST is a decoration, not protection.

Section 4

Why they trip — the common causes

⚠ Reset once, then investigate

Press RESET once. If it holds, it may have been moisture or a passing fault. If it trips again immediately with everything unplugged, something on that circuit is leaking current — don't keep resetting it.

Section 5

When tripping means a real wiring problem

Call an electrician if the GFCI trips with nothing plugged in, trips in dry weather on an outdoor circuit, won't reset at all, or if you find any outlet in a wet location that isn't GFCI-protected. Also call if the GFCI is warm, discolored, or more than 15 years old — replacement is a quick job.

And if your kitchen or bathroom has no GFCI outlets at all — just old two-prong or standard three-prong receptacles near the sink — that's worth a service call on its own. It's typically a fast upgrade that brings a big safety jump.
